The 30-Day Moving Checklist That Actually Works

Four weeks out: decide what moves with you

The cheapest carton is the one you never pack. Before you call a single mover, walk each room and sort belongings into keep, donate and discard. Most households cut ten to fifteen percent of their volume this way, and volume is the single biggest driver of your quote.

This is also the week to book your survey. An accurate estimate needs someone to see your stairs, your lift and your wardrobe count — not just a room number over the phone.

Three weeks out: paperwork and permissions

Housing societies often restrict move timings and require written approval. Ask your secretary now rather than on the morning your truck is double-parked outside.

Start closing local accounts too: gas connections, newspaper deliveries, gym memberships and anything tied to your current address.

Two weeks out: pack what you don't use daily

Off-season clothing, books, spare crockery and decor can go into cartons now. Label by room and content — 'Kitchen: everyday plates' beats 'Kitchen 3' when you are hunting for dinner on night one.

Photograph the back of your TV and router before unplugging anything. Reconnecting from a photo takes two minutes; reconnecting from memory takes an evening.

Move week: the essentials box

Pack one clearly marked box that travels with you: medication, chargers, a change of clothes, basic tools, toilet paper, soap, and a kettle. It is the difference between a manageable first night and a frustrating one.

Confirm your pickup window with your move manager the day before, and keep a printed copy of your inventory list.
