Moving With Pets and Plants: What to Plan For

Give pets a quiet room

Noise and open doors are the real risk on packing day. Keep pets in one closed, already-emptied room with water and a familiar blanket, and move them last.

Plants travel thirsty, not soaked

Water lightly two days before, never on the morning of. Waterlogged soil in a hot truck is what kills most houseplants in transit. Move ceramic pots separately from the plants themselves.

Check the rules for long-distance travel

Some states and most countries restrict the movement of soil and live plants. If you are moving interstate or abroad, confirm the rules before you pack — replacing a plant is easier than clearing a quarantine hold.
